(If you want to know why you might want to do that, read this.)

  1. Install Nudge (free)
  2. You should see the page below. Click the bottom link:

3. Enable the Unfollower. (This tool unfollows all your friends, pages and groups on Facebook, leaving you with an empty News Feed across all devices.)

4. Go to facebook.com (make sure you’re logged in) and unfollowing will happen automatically.

5. If you want to unfollow everything as fast as possible, just leave that Facebook tab open. You can carry on browsing in other tabs.

That’s it! Feel free to read ‘Frequently asked questions’ below to learn more before trying it out.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I want to delete my News Feed?

Loads of reasons, which I write about here.

How long does unfollowing take?

It takes around 1–3 seconds per unfollow so that Facebook’s anti-unfollowing protections don’t get triggered (a little longer on slow connections).

So if, for example, you currently follow 1,000 friends, pages and groups, unfollowing could take around 35 minutes.

Can I undo unfollowing?

Not with Nudge. But you can refollow manually by going to Facebook’s News Feed Preferences.

Won’t people notice that I’m not friends with them any more?

No. Unfollowing is not the same as deleting someone as a Facebook friend.

If you unfollow someone, you will still be their friend, but their posts will no longer appear in your News Feed. You’ll still be able to see all their posts simply by going directly to their profile.

Isn’t this the same as News Feed Eradicator and other similar tools?

No. The Unfollower actually changes your Facebook account so that you no longer have a News Feed, which means it works across all devices that you use Facebook on, including your phone.

What information do you use from my Facebook to do this?

Nudge has to temporarily scrape information about your friends, pages and groups to unfollow on your behalf.

This data is not sent to Nudge’s analytics platform. It gets deleted after you leave Facebook.

If you have data sharing enabled on Nudge (which you can turn off in Nudge Options), the only information related to your Facebook that Nudge will receive is the progress of your unfollowing.

Specifically, the number of friends, pages and groups you have unfollowed, and the percentage of your friends, pages and groups that you have unfollowed.

This data is anonymised, so there’s no way I can tell who you are.

Why am I still seeing stuff in my News Feed even though I unfollowed everything?

In some cases, once you’re 100% unfollowed, a few posts will remain for a couple of days — or you’ll still see some Facebook generated posts like ‘On This Day’.

You may have to manually hide some of these posts to stop them reoccurring (click the drop down arrow on the post’s top-right-hand corner).

Why are you paying for Facebook ads to get me off Facebook?

Altruistic reason: not having a News Feed has been life-changing for me, and I hope it might be for you too.

Non-altruistic reason: I’m hoping you might stick around to try some of Nudge’s other features that make the internet less addictive. You’ll see them on the Options page that you land on after enabling the Unfollower.

Humor-related reason: I think using Facebook’s ad platform to try and take down Facebook is funny.

I’m still not convinced. Can I ask you something else?

Sure. Email me on louis [at] nudgeware [dot] io
